Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional)

The Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) Subclass 188 Visa is for business owners or investors who would like to establish business operations in Australia.

What you need to know:

  • The visa is initially granted for 4 years but does transition to permanent residency.
  • Allows the main applicant to bring family members.
  • Allows the flexibility in traveling in and out of Australia.

What are the requirements for this visa?

  • The applicant has been nominated by a state or territory government
  • Achieve the pass mark for the Business Innovation and Investment Points test which is 65.
  • The main applicant must be under 55, unless exemptions from the state or territory government
  • Demonstrate a successful career in business or investment.

What are the different streams for the visa and their particular requirements?

  • The two streams in this visa category are business innovation stream and Investor stream.

Business Innovation stream

The business innovation stream visa requires the visa holder to have owned a business and are intending to establish or operate a business in Australia. To apply under this visa stream the requirements include:

  1. The visa holder has owned a business which has turnover of at least AUD $700,000 for at least 2 of the 4 years before the visa application has been made.
  2. The visa holder has business and personal assets of at least AUD1,250,000 which are available for the conduct or establishment of a business in Australia. In addition the funds needs to be available to be transferred to Australia within 2 years of the grant of the visa and the funds have been acquired legally.
  3. The visa holder has a commitment to establish and participate in Australian business.

Investor stream

The Investor stream visa is for those individuals that have owned a business or managed investments, and will invest $1.5million into Australian State or Territory Government Bonds. The requirements for this visa are include:

  • The visa holder must make an investment of $1.5m before the grant of the visa.
  • The visa holder has personal and business assets (net) of $2.25m for the last 2 years.
  • The visa holder has a commitment to establish and participate in Australian business.
